If you have precious or antique jewellery that you would like to sell, an auction is one of the better ways to get a good price for it.
Why sell your jewellery at auction?
While you can sell gold, silver and precious stone jewellery to a jeweller or dealer, chances are that they will just pay you for the value of the raw materials and not take into account how unique, well made or interesting a piece it is. On the other hand, those who buy jewellery at auctions are far more likely to recognise the true value of an item and it is therefore more probable that you will get a fairer price for it.
It is also gratifying to know that your precious jewellery will be bought by someone who appreciates and values it. It is much less likely that the piece will be taken apart or melted down if it is bought at auction as an authentic piece of antique jewellery.
How to sell your jewellery at auction
While some people are intimidated at the prospect of selling at auction, the process is actually very simple.
The first thing you should do is bring the jewellery to the auctioneers so they can assess it and give you an idea of its value. Once you’re happy with the value placed on your items you can decide whether or not to put a reserve price on any of them, so that they do not sell for less than a specific amount.
From this point the auctioneer will do all the hard work and sell the item on your behalf. Once sold you will receive the money paid for your items minus the commission charged.
What to look for in a jewellery auctioneer
Apart from the obvious, such as a good reputation and busy attendance at the auctions themselves, there are some other things you should look for in a good auctioneer:
- Free collection service
- Free valuations
- No charge when item unsold
- How do they promote the item beforehand?
- Upfront about any charges involved
