How To Sell At Auction

Selling at auction is a really easy process and Boningtons are available to assist in all ways possible.

Stage One: Bring your items into the saleroom for a free valuation upon first hand inspection or bring/e-mail photographs of items too large to carry. Alternatively, a home visit can be arranged.

Stage Two:Satisfy yourself with the values placed on your items and, if required, set a reserve price with the valuer, so that the items do not sell for under a certain amount.

Stage Three: We will market your pieces to our extensive client base and offer them in a suitable auction with live internet bidding, ensuring that they sell for the highest price possible.

Stage Four: Receive a cheque in the post for items sold. We do not charge for the items that have not sold.

While there are numerous ways to sell your possessions, it is in the auction room where the most explosive prices are achieved. Boningtons Auctioneers has recently realised some exceptional results for its clients. Recent notable sales have included a painting by Sir Winston Churchill, sold for £203,000 and an extremely rare Queen Anne 'Vigo' Gold Coin for £280,000 with both sales achieving significant worldwide press coverage.

In these instances the vendors originally had little idea of the value of their possessions and may never have known had they not proceeded to auction. Auctioning your property is also the most straightforward method of sale.

Free, confidential valuations can be obtained either by bringing items into the saleroom or simply by sending photographs to [email protected]

Our experienced team of specialists undertakes significant research, resulting in some important discoveries. Boningtons also provides a free home visit service to collect and value your items.

Boningtons is regularly commissioned to sell important private collections. The recent sale of the Frank Phillips Collection realised over £60,000, including £8,000 for an oil painting by William Charles Thomas Dobson. The vendor chose Boningtons as he was confident his items would reach their maximum potential. Boningtons ensures the best chances for your pieces to achieve the highest possible price as:

  • Your items are advertised to an international buyer base in either our Fortnightly Interiors sales, Specialist or Single Owner collection auctions.
  • Boningtons distributes its catalogues directly to an extensive client base of over 10,000 dealers, galleries and collectors.
  • Images of the entire catalogue are uploaded to our website, which receives over 40,000 international visits a month, and on leading auction catalogue hosting websites with over 100,000 monthly visitors.

We organise a number of viewing days before the sale so that potential buyers can visit our saleroom to view your items in person. This is crucial when dealing with specialist antiques, as bidders will only be prepared to pay the highest price possible if they can satisfy themselves regarding the condition of the item.

Competing buyers attend our auctions in person, arrange commission and telephone bids or bid live on the internet, meaning that Boningtons regularly sells items to bidders all over the world, and organises shipping on your behalf.

Once your items have been sold, you will receive payment for the proceeds, less commission. Boningtons do not charge for unsold items.
