Military items for auctionBoningtons is now open for viewing for its specialist Military, Coins & Medals auction on Monday 16th September. The 450+ lot sale contains a diverse and exciting selection of items across a range of fields and periods. The auction will commence with over 150 lots of coins, including one large private collection of proof coins and pattern proof sets – notably Lot 132, a UK Gold Proof Pattern Collection by Ellis (£3000-5000, pictured left).

The coinage is followed by an eclectic offering of militaria with something to appeal to every collector of this wide ranging field. Medals are particularly strong, with significant examples including A WWI Military Medal to Pte F G Hobden (Lot 192, pictured, £250-350), A German purple cased Crown Ducal Order of the Zahringen Lion (Lot 200, pictured, £400-600) and a family group of WWI & WWII medals to include a WWI DCM & VM & dog tags to 27502 PTE L-CPL A W Larwood of the 12th Suffolk Regiment & paperwork (Lot 193 A, pictured, £800-1200).

Also on offer is an important single private collection of WWI German clothing, weaponry & accessories which includes a rare selection of tin helmets (Lots 292-298) such as the illustrated Prussian Pickelhaube (Lot 297, £300-500). Also of interest to German collectors is a Wempe oversized military issue observation wristwatch (Lot 230, £800-1200, pictured top right). Some fine examples of earlier militaria will also be going under the hammer, such as Lot 328, A Napoleonic era Georgian proofed tower flintlock India pattern carbine (£500-800) and Lot 257, a cased silver mounted Napoleon cameo by William Harris (British, active circa 1800).

There are also some interesting early examples amongst the pictures which conclude the sale, as well as some fine later limited edition aviation prints by well listed artists Gerald Coulson and Robert Taylor, including works hand signed by notable pilots, and a large portrait of Winston Churchill after William Orpen (Lot 432, pictured, £100-200).
