A Rare Queen Anne ‘Vigo’ Five Guinea Gold Coin
Sold for £280,000
Boningtons are delighted to announce the sale of a rare Queen Anne ‘Vigo’ gold coin for £280,000 (inc. premium) in our auction on Wednesday 16th November.
The coin is one of only twenty made from gold seized from Spanish treasure ships by the British in Vigo Bay, northern Spain, in 1702.
The vendor originally had no idea of its value (he had given it to his 4 year old son to play with) before showing it to Boningtons’ coin specialist, Gregory Tong, who instantly recognised it as one of Britain’s rarest coins.
The coin’s incredible discovery drew worldwide press coverage & bidding (including a bid from Spain) before selling in the room to applause from all those in attendance.
The work was the highlight of our most successful ever auction which also saw some significant prices set by other works of art, paintings & Chinese ceramics (see below).
