Lot 202 Fine Art & Antiques Sayed Haider Raza (Indian, 1922-2016):
'Srakiti', acrylic on canvas, 1997, signed & dated lower centre, additionally signed, titled, & dated verso, H 120 x W 120, with certificate of authenticity signed by the artist & Armand Israel. Provenance: Art Moderne Et Contemporain, Marc-Arthur Kohn, Paris, 27th May 2014, Lot 92. Note: Emerging from the emancipatory individualism of the post-Independence era, Sayed Haider Raza's remarkably long career came to be defined by the quest for an Indian expression of modernism. A founding member of the celebrated Progressive Artists' Group alongside F. N. Souza, Raza left India on a government scholarship to Paris in 1950. Living in France until 2010, Raza was one of the few artists of his generation to find success abroad while maintaining a place of significance among the art community back home. Raza is best remembered for the series of Bindu paintings he began in the late '70s, which he continued to make for the rest of his life. These canvases featured a dot or a circle as a centre of energy, the seed of life & creation. In the 1990s, the date of the present picture, Raza extended his Bindu series, pairing triangles, squares & rectangles in red, blue, orange, yellow & green with deep black circles. In 2010, Raza became one of India's priciest modern artist when a seminal work, 'Saurashtra', 1983, sold for over £2million at a Christie's auction in London. He received the highest French civilian honour, the Commandeur de la Legion d'honneur (Legion of Honour) in July 2015.
