Our mid range antiques and collectables are sold through our fortnightly vintage sales, which leaves the top end antiques and works of art fighting for a place in our fine art sales which are held throughout the year.
Some antiques collectors have a special affinity for antique teapots. They come in so many different styles, ranging from elegant and sophisticated to whimsical and cute. These vessels are typically made of a ceramic or porcelain and are where teas are mixed with hot water to make tea. Most have a long spout with a rounded opening in the end. In the lid of antique teapots you'll find a small hole that allows air to come in during pouring to prevent spilling. Some antique teapots come complete with their own tea cosy that keeps them from cooling too rapidly.
We are still consigning for this sale and would welcome further Lots, please call the saleroom for a valuation or send a message using the form below
If you are interested in collecting antique teapots, look closely to check for crackling on the surface of porcelain pots or work places on silver teapots. You may find discoloration on the inside from years of tea-making. Often the handle will show signs of wear as well. These should not be considered "deal breakers". On the contrary, some collectors particularly like the fact that their antique teapots were useful and well-loved in their previous life.
Some antique teapots may have markings on the bottom indicating the manufacturer and in some cases the year they were made. There are reference books available that can help you understand what the various markings mean. Collecting antique teapots can be a very satisfying pursuit, particularly considering that most of them come with a back story that, though unknown, is fun to speculate about.
