Our mid range antiques and collectables are sold through our fortnightly vintage sales, which leaves the top end antiques and works of art fighting for a place in our fine art sales which are held throughout the year.
Spoons from earlier eras were far more than simply eating utensils. For example, it was once customary to give a baby a christening spoon, which may have been engraved with the child's name and birth date. These antique spoons ended up providing valuable records for genealogy researchers, among others.
We are still consigning for this sale and would welcome further Lots, please call the saleroom for a valuation or send a message using the form below
It was at one time traditional to give "funeral spoons" to pallbearers for prominent citizens. These spoons were engraved with the deceased's name and date of death as well as the recipient's name. Silver spoons were also given to newly married couples, marked with the couple's initials and sometimes with the wedding date. Though these spoons are rare today, they are that much more valuable for it.
Other types of antique spoons are more readily available. While they may not have the intrigue provided by christening spoons or other engraved spoons, they can be quite beautiful. People sometimes collect antique spoons for use during special occasions, or simply for their beauty. Serving spoons, tablespoons, demitasse spoons, or teaspoons are types of antique spoons to look for if you are interested in putting together a collection. You need not confine yourself to one style or size, as an eclectic collection can be quite charming in itself, particularly for special, casual gatherings.
