Egyptian Influences on English Furniture
Egyptian Influences on English Furniture was popularised by Thomas Hope and George Smith after Napoleon Egyptian expedition. In 1807, household furniture and interior decoration was published for Thomas Hope highlighting detail containing Sphinxes and Classical motifs in Ormolu on furniture. George Smith a cabinet maker also published a book in 1808 ‘Collection of Designs for Household Furniture & Interior decoration’ He also included Sphinxes and bizarre animal forms. Their work is considered hugely important and influential in the development, taste and style of the early part of the 19th century.
