2012 started with a bang for Boningtons as its first sale of the New Year saw a number of lots sell for significant prices.
There was some extremely competitive bidding on a large consignment of gold coins from England, Europe and America with a cased 1837 60th anniversary Victorian gold medal selling for a hammer price of £2900. Further highlights included an 1887 Victorian £5 gold coin (hammer price £1300), a 1902 Edwardian £5 gold coin (£1150) and a 2004 50 dollar gold coin (£1000). Boningtons coin and medal valuer Gregory Tong was delighted with these p...

At Auction, many weapons are brought in for appraisal: knives, bayonets, shotguns, pistols and rifles, automatic weaponry, sub machine guns and heavy machine guns. Each has had a role from turbulent times in our past history and from histories around the world.
One of the earliest forms of weapons we see are Flintlock’s, these were mainly used from the 18th to 19th century before they were superseded by the percussion era and then evolved further into the cartridge which ended the muzzle loading format of weaponry (except for the wonderful enthusiasts who keep this sport alive, throu...

We were pleased to consign over the counter 2 Concerntina’s from separate sources found whilst clearing out relatives deceased estates. A Boningtons valuer decided they should be entered into a fortnightly Antiques and Collectables sale. The first instrument, a Chenal and Co. model in its original wooden box and in good order achieved £1,500* against an estimate of £300 to £500. The second Concertina was a Jeffries and Co, encased in leather and in excellent condition. This item sold on the telephone for £4,100* against an estimate of £500 to £800....

Another fortnight flew by and here we were again with another full Auction room. The highlight for me last week was a home visit to a ladies house in Essex who had managed to buy a Clarice Cliff vase at a local jumble sale for £0.50. Telling the lady we estimated the vase between £400 and £600 gave her a massive shock and me great pleasure. The vase was a 1932 Bizarre ‘Moonlight’ pattern, 360 shaped handpainted with a stylised tree and flower landscape and in A1 condition. The final sale price on Monday after much frantic bidding was £950*; two very deli...

The Sale, once again attracted a full house. Apart from our faithful regulars, new faces were plentiful, mainly due to the 60 Lot Moorcroft section with pieces by well known artists Sally Tuffin, Sian Leaper and Emma Bossons. Although the items were modern they sold well above estimate. Bidding in the Furniture section was also buoyant, a Regency Console table made £450 against an estimate of £150-£200. The Picture section had very good original print by L S Lowry 1887-1976, it was of a Manchester Street scene with brightly coloured figures and in unfaded condition.
